Tilling Tea and Cake – Staying Scam-Savvy, FAiR’s Christmas event and a Hint of Panto Fun!
Our latest Tilling Tea and Cake was, as always, a pleasure — a warm and friendly morning filled with conversation, laughter, and the familiar faces of our wonderful regulars and supporters. It’s lovely to see how this monthly gathering continues to bring our Winchelsea Beach community together over delicious tea, cakes, and PET therapy with Ted (adorable)
This month’s event included an informative talk about scams — how to recognise them, avoid them, and protect yourself and loved ones. Sadly, scams are becoming increasingly sophisticated, targeting people in many different ways. We discussed some of the most common examples currently circulating:
-
Phishing Emails and Texts – Fraudulent messages pretending to be from your bank or government departments, asking you to click a link or share personal details.
-
Fake Delivery Notifications – Texts claiming a parcel couldn’t be delivered and requesting a small payment to “reschedule” delivery.
-
Phone Scams – Callers posing as the police or your bank, warning of “suspicious activity” and urging you to transfer money to a “safe account.”
-
Online Shopping Scams – Websites offering unbelievable deals that either deliver fake goods or take your payment without sending anything at all.
But with awareness comes empowerment. Chris and Jan shared practical solutions to stay safe:
-
Stop and Think – Never rush into a decision, especially if a message or call feels urgent or threatening.
-
Check the Source – Contact the company or organisation directly using verified contact details.
-
Use Strong Passwords – Unique, secure passwords (and two-factor authentication) add an extra layer of protection.
-
Keep Software Updated – Regular updates help block the latest security threats.
-
Report and Share – Report scams to Action Fraud and warn others — talking about it helps protect the whole community.
We also shared an important local safety reminder from East Sussex Fire & Rescue Service, who are offering FREE electric blanket safety checks this autumn.
